Marine biologist Dr. Ella Novak is sent to assess captive orca Moon Shadow and approve euthanasia. She refuses after a silent gaze. Park founder Kyle Sterling, who built the facility because his late daughter said "She knows me," asks Ella to release the whale. They sail the research vessel Moon Shadow, guiding her back to Alaskan waters where she was captured 34 years ago. Despite legal pursuit by Ellis Hammond, they stall their boat so Moon Shadow can swim free. Using memory, currents, and sunlight, she navigates canyons and open sea, eventually joining a wild pod. Ella overcomes her guilt from failing a stranded whale at age twelve, while Kyle honors his daughter's belief. The orca becomes no longer "the last" but part of her own kind.
